We are profoundly shocked and saddened by Br Brian’s tragic death. He died at his parish home in Lamu, Kenya, apparently the victim of a robbery.

Brian’s body was discovered by his housekeeper on Thursday morning. He had been severely beaten around the head with a wooden stick, most likely between 9 pm and 10 pm on Wednesday 9 April during a power cut. Some money was found missing and other items were taken from the house, some of which were later found in the garden. There is no other apparent motive for the murder. It is possible that he was killed because he might have recognised the robbers. The police are continuing their investigations.

The Catholic Mission in Lamu where Brian was killed
We extend our deepest sympathy to his brother and family, his friends and the peace-loving people of Lamu whom he served so generously and faithfully.
Br Brian was a gentle, just and conscientious missionary who took his life commitment to serving those most in need, very seriously. His death at the age of 77 is a tragic end to a life dedicated to helping others. He will be missed by us all.
Br Brian’s death highlights the many and varied dangers facing missionaries throughout the world, as well as the powerful influence of good people like Br Brian.
His body will be taken from the mortuary to the Catholic Church in Lamu at 8.00 am on Tuesday, 15 April 2008. The Funeral Mass will take place at 2.00 pm and will be presided over by Rt Rev Francis Baldacchino, Bishop of Malindi Diocese. Representatives of the Mill Hill Missionaries and the people of the island will be present. He will be taken by boat to be buried at the British Cemetery on the outskirts of the village of Shela.
