The British Regional Assembly took place at the Oblate Retreat Centre, Wistaton between 4th and 6th May 2009. Thirty-nine members took part and this was described as a solid turn out. Judging from the evaluations, the Assembly turned out to be a good experience for many, not just because of the input but because of members coming together to share their stories and genuinely sharing each other's company.

The main speaker, Fr Donal Dorr, Kiltegan missionary, offered some thoughtful input on the topic of “A Spirituality for Missionary Ministry in the Home Church.” He singled out two “constituencies” that most of us minister to in one way or another: the “Pious” and the “Searchers” (the many who are disillusioned with formal religion but who are searching for spiritual nourishment in all kinds of places –except in the traditional Christian Churches!) How do we help them get in touch with the deep, spiritual mystical riches that are available within our Christian tradition? Secondly, how do we articulate the fundamental Christian truths in language that makes sense to contemporary women and men of this Island?

Fr Len Kofler gave a talk on the Qualities for Leadership and Br Eddie Slawinski had several of the participants give examples of how they had done their bit for justice and peace in the past year. He challenged all of us in the coming year to undertake at least one action in favour of Justice and Peace and the Integrity of Creation.

The Irish Region had a Regional Day on 6th May 2009. The main topic of the day was Safeguarding Children. Sr. Colette Stevenson IBVM of the National Office for Safeguarding Children gave a talk on the 'Standards and Guidance Document for the Catholic Church in Ireland'. The emphasis was on creating a safe environment for the welfare of children at all time. During the second session of the morning, Sr. Colette answered questions. In the afternoon session, there were brief reports on AFJN and Misean Cara, and some day to day matters were discussed. The Regional Day was attended by 27 members. The next Regional Day will be held on 7th October 2009.
