Fourteenth Obituary of 2008             1st July 2008

We regret to announce the death in Brixen General Hospital, Brixen,  Italy on 1st July 2008, at the age of 76, of

Pio Crazzolara

May he rest in peace

Pio was born on 20th February 1932 in La Villa-Stern, Bozen, Italy to Dominic Crazzolara and Mary Pizzinini.  He had two brothers and three sisters.  He entered the Minor Seminary in Brixen and went on to study Philosophy between 1951 and 1953.  He left for Mill Hill to take up his theological studies in 1953.   He took his Perpetual Oath on 7th May 1956 and was  ordained on 7th July 1957 at St Joseph’s College, Mill Hill.

After his ordination, Pio was apppointed to do organising work in Brixen. His first overseas posting came in 1959.  He left for the Philippines and spent the next forty-two years working in Antique: first in Tibiao, then in Guisang-an which he set up in 1966, and finally in Patria.  He was particularly remembered as a competent builder and also for his care of the sick.  In each place he worked, he opened a dispensary and administered medicine donated from Germany to the poor.  He was also greatly involved in the healing ministry and was well known as a water-diviner.

Pio had always struggled with deteriorating health.  He had problems with his prostate gland which was kept under control with medication.  While on home leave in January 2002, Pio made the decision to retire from the missions.  On 1st February 2002, he was officially withdrawn from the Philippines and appointed to retire in the German Speaking Region.  He kept his missionary spirit by praying for people and made rosaries as a way of helping the people of the Philippines to pray.

On Tuesday, 1st  July 2008, Pio was taken to the General Hospital in Brixen after collapsing in the early hours of the morning.  He passed away peacefully at around 9.30 am, most likely from a brain haemorrhage.   He will be buried in the town cemetery after the Requiem Mass which will take place at 2.00 pm on Thursday, 3rd July 2008 in the Chapel of Missionshaus in Brixen .

The previous obituary notice (13/2008) was that of Fr Dan O’Connell, who died in Culloo, Valencia Island, Ireland on 30th June, 2008.
