6th December 2009
We regret to announce the death in Herberthaus, Brixen, Italy, on 6th December 2009, at the age of 66, of
Fr Angelo Insam
May he rest in peace
Angelo Francesco Insam was born on 15th December 1942 in Santa Christina Val Gardena, Italy, to Jacob Insam and Maria Runggaldier. He had five sisters and eight brothers. After finishing his initial education in Gymnasium, he went to the Minor Seminary in Dorftirol and was there from 1954 until 1963. He completed one year of philosophical studies at Brixen until 1964 when he went to St Joseph’s College, Mill Hill for his theological studies. He took his Perpetual Oath on 1st May 1967 at Mill Hill and was ordained a priest on 29th June 1968 at Brixen Cathedral by Bishop Joseph Gargitter.
On 12th February 1968, Angelo was appointed to Tororo Diocese, Uganda. On 17th July 1973, he was appointed to the staff of the Mill Hill College in Brixen. On 18th June 1975 he was appointed to Kisii Diocese, Kenya where he worked among the Kuria in Isibania Mission, Suna. His work among them earned him the name ‘the apostle of the Kuria’ as he was the only missionary who knew their language and culture. On 27th September 1984, Angelo received an appointment for vocation and promotion work in Absam to begin in April 1985. This did not materialise. In September 1990, he began his sabbatical at the Institute of St Anselm, Cliftonville. After his sabbatical, on 4th June 1991, Angelo was appointed to the German Speaking Region for Missionary vocation, promotion and animation work to begin from September 1991. This appointment was eventually withdrawn at his own request and he was reappointed to Kenya on 6th November 1991 and he went to work in Kehancha Catholic Mission in the Diocese of Homa Bay. After his home leave in September 2001, Angelo took up a renewal course from February until May 2002 at St Beuno’s in Wales. He then returned to Kenya to work in Ngong Diocese and was among those responsible for establishing the new mission of St Paul’s in Naroosura.
While at home in August 2007, Angelo had an operation on his oesophagus in Hall in Tirol and remained in hospital for twelve days before he was discharged on 21st September. Because of his fragile health, he was withdrawn from the East African Region on 1st October 2007 and appointed to the German Speaking Region. After his recuperation, Angelo requested to return to the missions and on 12th November 2008 he was reappointed to the African Region effective from 1st December 2008. He took up his appointment in the Diocese of Malindi. He returned home at the end of April 2009 due to continuing health problems. Subsequent medical checks revealed the presence of a tumour and he was admitted to various hospitals in Brixen and Hall in Tirol and underwent radiation treatment in Innsbruck. He was cared for at Herberthaus, Brixen. A few days ago, he lapsed into a coma. On Sunday, 6th December, Angelo passed away peacefully at 6.10 am. His funeral will take place on Wednesday in Brixen at 3.00 pm on Wednesday, 9th December 2009.
The previous obituary (12/2009) was that of Fr Hans Bachmann who died in Auckland Hospital, New Zealand, on 22nd November 2009.
